[隨手] Racing in the Street + Thunder Road

大約是在大學四年級下學期的某一個百無聊賴的午後，衛方偶然打開了收音機，DJ是知名音樂作家馬世芳（後來才知他算是衛方的鄰居），收音機裡正在播放著「老闆」Bruce Springsteen跟老闆的 E Street Band 的現場實況。據說是側錄老闆1979年某場巡迴演出實況的「靴子腿」（bootlegs，原意為美國禁酒時期藏在靴子裡的小瓶私釀酒，後來借喻為流行樂/搖滾樂現場實況演出側錄的實況錄音）。雖然是1979年的錄音，然而生猛有勁卻猶如昨日。衛方就從這裡，將「老闆」這個人和音樂，記憶在他的腦海中。

後來大學畢業後在網路公司上班，待遇平平，工時很長，大家為理想而戰，衛方想像著自已有一天會成為中文體育界的名嘴，像Dick Vitale 那種形象鮮明的。網路公司別的沒有，就是網路資源最多，當時臺灣的商用網路環境還在普遍使用56k modem撥接上網，在網路公司上班，傳檔聽歌相當方便，然後又有了第一代的 peer to peer 網路共享軟體 Napster，可以讓使用者直接連到別人的電腦裡抓取別人開放分享的 mp3 音樂檔。

衛方在上班的時候，一面看著各地的體育網站、寫外電、搞翻譯、寫文章，電腦的另一端開著 Napster 搜尋各種搖滾樂。我就在napster上，從地球某處不知名的電腦上找到了一整場的「老闆」現場實況，1978年在克里夫蘭，估計跟當初馬世芳在電台上播放的實況屬於同一個巡迴。

於是下載，於是燒成光碟，那時衛方還很懂電腦這些玩意兒，若干首mp3轉成CD格式檔再燒成CD算不了一回事。後來網路泡沫崩盤，衛方回來唸研究所，開著一輛老三菱車在臺北與中壢之間來回，車上必備的就是那已燒成兩張CD的「老闆」靴子腿。有些時候，中山高開煩了，衛方曾經試著開過平面道路（省道一號），也開過一些另類的道路，例如說，在天氣晴朗的時候，開上西濱快速道路，可以看到美麗的海景（雖然之後要回到市區要大繞路）。那時候，就會放著這首「Racing in the Street」。

當衛方準備開車回到臺北的時候，總是會順便問問在上夜間部的小薇，要不要接送她一程。在很多個夜裡，當小薇坐進車裡的時候，聽到的也都是「老闆」蒼涼沉鬱的歌聲，輕盈美麗的鋼琴伴奏，飽滿的貝斯顆粒，還有難忘的薩克斯風，是東街樂團的臺柱 "Big Man" Clarence Clemons的註冊商標。

衛方始終不甚明白小薇是否曾經對他動心過。畢竟，小薇看過太多對她示好的男生了，她也始終不乏自願開車接送的紳士。但衛方記得，他不止一次問過小薇，「老闆」的歌好聽嗎？小薇總是點頭稱是。但小薇不像是會是聽「老闆」唱歌的女生，衛方也始終以為，小薇只是不方便說「不怎麼好聽」。

直到過了很久，久到衛方開始接受現實，正視自己可能終究將被綁縛在這個小島上，面對一些其實不怎麼樣的雜事、一些不怎麼大方的客戶，跟不知何時才能還清的債務的時候，衛方看到了小薇在facebook上分享的 youtube 連結，是 Michael Jackson 邀集的群星大合唱 "We are the World"時，小薇的評語竟然是「Bruce Springsteen讚」。當然，老闆有參加大合唱。只是很訝異的是，小薇關注的竟然是老闆（而不是Michael Jackson或合唱這件事）。

那一剎那，衛方心中如打翻一個五味瓶，辨不清是何滋味。令衛方稍感安慰的是，即使他只是小薇生命中的過客，也已不會再見到小薇，但畢竟兩人的相遇留下了一些足以紀念的痕跡，比方說，小薇因此而認識了老闆。

有那麼一天，衛方也想要帶著安琪兒（他們在一起忽然也兩年半了）一起開車到海邊.... 熟悉的海岸邊有個路標，寫著「打雷路」。
